I got a flowerhorn about three weeks ago. He is a beautiful kamalu. When I bought him he had pearls on his cock (full) and was about 4.5 inches (body, excluding tail). I have been feeding him a mixture of Headbooster 100, Max 100, and Hikari Bio Gold all equal amounts. he is now about 5.5 inches and his head has grown... but the pearls are no longer on his head.

What can I do to get the pearls back?

I have frozen krill I have been putting in one or two piece a day. Is shrimp better than the krill?

The pearls on the kok may look fading but i think its from the kok expanding.
Therefore the pearls will take some time to become more shiny again.
It also depends on the genes, some will maintain the pearls if the genes are very strong.

Yes, his kok still has the "lines and dots" where pearls were and it looks like pearls should be. But right now they just look like faded lines. This is my first flowerhorn, is it normal for the pearls to fade out as the kok grows?

I think James nailed this one. They will come back. When my KML goes through a growth sperts in his kok it take a will for the pearls to fill back in.I think this is a great young KML reminds me of mine.Which is about 7'' tip to tip from Thailand.Keep doing what your doing.I do think that that your gravel is to light in color for KML.I really think it would help to darken that up alittle

I pulled 80% of the gravel out of the tank over the past week (did not want to kill to much bacteria). Right now it is bare with just a small path of gravel in the tank. Is it better for his color to have no gravel or to buy some darker colored gravel?

He is also from Thailand.

try finding some red clay colored pebbles or get the big river rocks is better.
You can find these cheaper at landscaping companies. I think LFS
is a bit expensive.

I like to run gravel.Help keep the tank looking clean and I run undergravel filters in all my tanks. So I think gravel is better and here is the gravel I use with blue background and all my fish seen to look good in this combo. Also Im wondering what color your light is it you look into it.I think it might be blueish green.I would change bulbs to a AquaRay fresh and salt made by G.E..It puts off light pink that just make KMLs look sweet.Hope this help and pm me any time bro

I will look for some darker gravel.

This is the light I run http://www.petmountain.com/product/aquariu...me-t5ho-x2.html

It looks pink when you look into it.
