In the beginning...
The origin of flowerhorn

In 1993 -Malaysians admired fishes with protruding head, known as Karoi, in the western part of Malaysia, also known as warship. In Taiwan, this fish has a slight protruding forehead and long tail, and is widely accepted in the Chinese society which brings luck in geomancy.

In 1994 - The import of Red Devil also known as human face and Blood Parrot from Taiwan to Malaysia mark the birth of flowerhorn.

In 1995 - With the introduction of 1994 birth of flowerhorn this has lead to the blood parrot being crossbreed with the Human Face Red God of Fortune which produced a new species called five-colors god of fortune. With its beautiful colors, it has brought an overwhelming response.

In 1998 - It has further improved with the import of seven-colors blue fiery mouth, from South America, known as Greenish Gold Tiger and Jin Gang Blood Parrot from Taiwan. This crossbreeding was a success, leading to the first generation of flowerhorns named Hua Luo Han which is then followed by subsequent flowerhorn developments.

In 1998 It has further improved with the import of seven-colours blue fiery mouth, from South America, known as Greenish Gold Tiger and Jin Gang Parrot from Taiwan. This crossbreeding was a success, leading to the first generation of flowerhorns, named Hua Luo Han which is then followed by subsequent flowerhorn developments. The flowerhorn arena still continues till today.

Arrival In the US.

When flowerhorn first arrived there were really only 2 breeds of these fish for distribution, flowerhorn and jks. Flowerhorn came in 2 varieties those with pearls and those with out. Jks also had two varieties, those that faded and those that didn't. With the flowerhorns, the ones w/o pearls were quickly over taken by those with pearls, so then it became pearl scale flowerhorn (zhen zhou). With the jks the unfaded ones developed nice golden skin over the flowerhorns grey skin.

So at 1999 there were 4 strains of flowerhorn hitting the American market, regular flowerhorn, pearl scale flowerhorn, golden flowerhorn, and jks. there were so many breeders that these 4 strains had so many different names and minor variations, that names became a joke. No importer wanted to hear a name but rather look at the fish. Knowing this the breeders and exporters started line breeding going for better quality traits and so fourth. The pearl scale flowerhorn beat out regular flowerhorn and became ZZs

About now its 2000-2001 and kamfa hit the scene. These were hybrids of any type of flowerhorn crossed with any vieja or parrot. These guys brought on some new traits people became interested with. Short mouths, tail wrap, sucked in eyes, and of course bigger koks. seeing this those guys who had the GMs began to line breed there fish to have similar traits. Those who had the ZZs wanted to completely dominate the market and began line breeding there fish to develop faster and become more colorful. This meant that they could have a fish that could compete with the kamfa strains.

Malaysian Report on Flowerhorns - Some very famous fish featured including live video of some early GMs

King Kong Parrots, Ingots - Informations courtesy of www.happybreed.com
The differences between Red Mommon, Red Ingot and Blood Parrot, King Kong Parrot

Blood Parrot is the earliest defined type of the Cichlid bred, King Kong Parrot is the typical type of Cichlid hybrid at earlier stage, therefore, King Kong parrot has been comparing with latest hybrid Cichlid; but the Blood Parrotâ€™s shape is smaller, with bigger head, more protruding eyes and V-shape mouth; King Kong Parrot has longer size with reddish orange

colour, dorsal fin are shorterthan anal fin, the shape is similar to the Red Devil, when it grows to the size of 18 cm, the shape of the mouth changes to triangle with more protruding jaw, only 20% of them grow to the size of half kilogram.

Most of the colour of Blood Parrot and King Kong Parrots seen in the market are changed into purple and blue by pigment injection, and this is not good for the fishs liver and will shorten their life, the colour injected will not last for a long time, once the colour fades, it will not be recovered to the original one. The Blood Parrot and King Kong Parrots bred in the Happy Fishery Breed & Research Centre has the natural red colour as it fed with the natural attractants instead of the pigment injection. The length of the dorsal fin and anal fin is longer than the tail fin and the mouth can open and close naturally, the shape is round and big with clear eyes and good stability, 90% of them grow to 1 kg or above with characteristic look in appearance, chin and shape.

The red and round refined Red Mommon, Red Ingot is the majority type of Cichlid bred due to the popular refinery trend in the market, furthermore, theres only one famous fish breeding farm exclusively produces it and the supply is stable with good quality. Both of the fishes are the best choice for appreciation, breeding or Feng Shui(geomantic omen).

The Red Mommon is named for its high forehead which looks like the hat worn by the God of Fortune, the Red Ingot is named for its Yuan-Bao shape (odd-shaped gold or silver formerly used as money in China) appearance which looks like the Yuan-Bao, The reason Mr. Wang named Red Mommon and Red Ingot is because of its well-liked red colour. Kavalan is the ancient name of the I-Lan city, people will know the fish is produced in I-Lan and this is certainly the pride of Taiwan in its fish breeding industry.

Red Mommon and Red Ingot grow faster in the first year with the size at about 20cm, it will grow to 25 to 28cm two year later, however, its maximum growing size is not known yet as its still continue to grow and its believed that the fish may grow to the size of 30cm or above in the future.
Its suggested to breed both of the fish at 28C in water temperature, PH6~8,KH3~6. Basically, the fish is strong to be well adapted to the surrounding unless of the quick change of the water quality. To maintain the best colour, its suggested to breed them in slightly acid water; its also necessary to test the NH3, NH4, NO2 regularly for the concern of its health and colour.

Both of the fishes can be bred with different kind of fishes attributes to its gentle characteristic, especially outstanding with Dragon Fish, it brings out extraordinary
Character and looks thus it makes the hit among aquarium world

Kamfa

Identification
This breed originated from Louhan. It's main characteristics are white or yellow eye (red eyes possible but not common), fan tail, water head, sunken eyes, smaller lips than zz. Generally has a larger and more square body shape than that of a ZZ. Head flowers can be found on the Kamfa, but not as prevelantly as ZZ. The most common and basic type of Kamfa is a Zhen Zhu X Blood Parrot. These fish typically carry more Zhen Zhu features with a better tail and yellow or white eyes. More complex Kamfa's come from the vieja side of the flowerhorn tree above.

Breeding
Kamfa's typically are viewed as being much more difficult to breed. Their time to breeding maturity is much longer than that of a ZZ. In addition to a longer maturation period Kamfa's also have fertility issues. A general rule of thumb is that fish with red eyes tend to be more fertile on the whole, than those with white or yellow eyes. Since most Kamfa's have yellow or white eyes they tend to be less fertile. Because of these fertility issues refined kamfas are hard to find. Most Kamfa strains are the result of an outcrossing resulting in a few specimens of superior quality and hybrid vigor. Since Kamfas are more difficult to breed on the whole they are also more expensive than most other breeds.

Care
Kamfa care and upkeep is a little more intense than most other breeds as well. They have a greater sensitivity to fluctuations in water parameters. This is especially true for older Kamfa strains, They actually prefer aged water (water that has been conditioned, heated and aerated for a period of at least 24hrs prior to adding to the tank). Newer Kamfa strains are not as finicky about the water used but do require diligent tank and filter maintenance to look their best.

Behaviour
Kamfas also differ in the way they act and interact with their environment and owner. Generally Kamfas are thought to be more aggressive than other breeds (although aggressiveness also comes down to the individual fish). They also use a more rear propulsion method of swimming style which give them a different look and feel in the owners tank. Many people enjoy the way their behaviour manifests itself in the fishes interaction with the owner. Kamfas are great "finger chasers" and delight in defending their tank and territory even from a well-meaning owner. Their territorial nature is important in the way a Kamfa looks and matures. A Kamfa that is not happy with their tank placement, waterparameters, tank mates, etc will not show off their true potential. It's important to try different methods for a Kamfa that is not up to par. Some common practices include:

Add a mirror to the tank - Some hobbyists use a mirror to induce the fish to spar with itself. One must be careful not to place the mirror in an area where the fish can injure itself while sparing. Placing the mirror outside the tank could cause serious damage to a fish, including spinal fractures from the impact against the aquarium glass

Adding a Tank mate or BP - Using a divider some hobbyists will place a smaller fish or "Target fish" on the other side of the divider or in a protective mesh net. This strategy works well for those fish who've figured out the mirror trick. The more dominant and comfortable the Kamfa feels the better his appearance. There are some drawbacks to this method however. If the tankmate is permanent the tank will require more upkeep and cleaning. If the target fish ends up to be more dominant than the Kamfa, the Kamfa will be worse off than when started. Some Kamfas do not do well with tank mates at all. Even a simple pleco can make some fish feel vulnerable in their own tank. This method can work exteremly well for some individual fish and backfire for others

Corals and crushed corals
Many Kamfa owners add crushed corals or whole coral pieces to their tank. The coral acts as a PH buffer to decrease the fluctuation in water parameters that occurs doing a water change. Given a Kamfa's sensitivity to water parameters this can aid greatly in their development. In addition coral pieces provide great surface area for in-tank biological filtration.

Background
The background on the tank can greatly influence the look and appearance of an individual fish. Some Kamfa owners use a colorful saltwater tank background to encourage the fishes color to become more vibrant. Other types of Kamfas, like King Kamfas, do better with a black background. This can help set off the double flower row that KKs are known for and make them appear more solid and less faded.

No matter which combination or combinations of the above it's important to understand that not every method will work for every fish. So if your Kamfa is not looking as good as you think he could, keep experimenting with these environmental factors until you find the combination that works best for your individual fish.

Golden Monkey - please see here: http://www.flowerhorncraze.com/Know-t1485.html

*Note: The origin of GM is often hotly contested. Civil open debate will always be encouraged, but there is a place for everthing. Discussion of this article can be posted under the General Discussion Forum, while the article will remain closed.

“The real Golden Monkey or KAMALAU is bred by Mr. Lam Seah and Lam Soon in Bercham, Ipoh, Malaysia. The last Generation is GEN 3 and all of them were sold to A-1 Aquarium during the year 2001. This type of FH is a LOUHAN based fish and not a mixed type Zenzhu or Kamfa.”

Accordingly,

“The entire 3rd GENERATION was composed of 320 fry of which only 12 pieces turned out to be true Golden Monkey or KAMALAU. The rest were then culled by A-1 AQUARIUM. The cost during that time for the entire batch was RM 50,000 or US $13,513.51.”

Now this is the main controversy, if the fish is not from LAM SEAH, its 100% not Golden Monkey or Kamalau. Where the same goes for the saying, if it is not from Ah Soon it is 100% not a Golden Apple or JPG.

From my sources and original breeders, there is a line that has held a percentage of the bloodline constant. Hence the reason why there is no True GM or Kamalau but an offspring of that classification or GMF2 nomenclature. This being due to the constant crossing of new bloodlines.

“All the TOTAL KAMALAU in the world in the year 2001 were only 48 FHs...each one being recorded by A-1 Aquarium as they bought 2 of the GENERATIONS. The first GEN is only 10 FH which were all bought by an Indonesian businessman during the year 2001. The total price for the 10 FHs at the time was US $100,000.”

Here’s the biggest flaw in trying to attain the original line.

“There were 18 females being used....until recently with only 2 remaining. The rest has already reported in Heaven”

“One of the females was being used in producing the pendians of the JPG and the other one was still with Lam Seah”

Now, even Mr. Seah has had problems trying to achieve the origin.

“The last few years, he has been trying his best...but the batches have not been successful.”

“To produce the original parents you need about 4 to 5 years... 3 Generations...
Not breeder friendly to the Kamalau and the JPGs, taking them much longer to breed.”

“For a Kamfa to get the best stock usually around F4 class, the best of the best of 3 batches have to be picked, grown, and bred how many times to produce the best fishes.”

“It took them nearly 12 years just to create the Golden Apple or JPG. For the original Kamalau it took them 2 years later to make, not as easy as you think.

“The 4 months that you think about how easy it is to breed the Zz strain think about this young Kamfa and the time it takes for it to reach sexual maturity, 3 years!”

This was disclosed to me during my research of the Kamalau.

“The Kamalau and the KGM are not the same. The KGM which I have now is more of a Zenzhu X Kamfa based fish.”

KAMALAU as Lam Seah do it again yet. The other qualities that we see are almost like the full pearl Kamfa's and the rest with full pearls markings, but are not LOUHAN based fish...

The Golden Apple was the nearest to the class of the real Kamalau.

The way I understand it is “Yes” a JPG is a Luohan based Flowerhorn and has a similar body structure.

With respect to the GM breeder...anyway you look at it, the Kamalau strain could be revived if one looks beyond the breeder Mr. Lam Seah. What I mean is Lam Seah may be the breeder of GM but not the creator of GM (you may want to ask him yourself).

That's why up to this day, he still cannot figure out what are the genetic compositions of this great strain and how to reproduce it.

What is then what we have heard about KAMALAU..?

“The new Kamalau that we see today is a replacement for the earlier fish.”

“But sad to say, the new GMF2s do not represent the real thing...both fish have pearls, but the real KAMALAU has more than that....the metallic sheen in the whole fish...the real quality of the LOUHAN is not represented.”

“The KAMALAU is also the KGM of Indonesia and also called Kamfa-Malau. This type of fish is a mix between the full pearl Kamfa and a Zenzhu which we called the TORNADO EFFECT (Disclosure). Hope people will understand regarding this.”

“Correct me if I am wrong, the quality of a real Kamalau has to be like the JPG right? Since JPG is also one of the few, if not the only, Luohan based Flowerhorn presently around.

“The main difference between the Kamalau (Golden Monkey) and the JPG (Golden Apple) is the base color of the JPG being metalic in some generations.”

“Fundamentally, correct me if I am wrong, if it is bred by Lam Seah, he calls it Kamalau or Golden Monkey but if it is bred by Ah Soon, he calls it JPG or Golden Monkey.”

Picture one of the real Kamalau from A-1 Aquarium

Look at the face...the face looks also like the JPG...

Look at the head....

The way it is understood, JPG is a Luohan based Flowerhorn and has a similar body structure.

For pearls, you have the Gen 1 KGM's and the King Bacara's. There is also the Kamalau.

The problem is all 3 mentioned above are also expensive.

there are several characteristics of a true Golden Monkey that are different compare to regular Zhen Zhu and Zhen Zhu Malau. What I mean by true Golden Monkey is the GMs which are from the same generation as the Indo Grand Champion Golden Monkey posted above. First characteristic is the redness. The redness of a true Golden Monkey is way deeper than regular ZZ. The red color is very deep like the color of blood and seems like it is from beneath the skin and will not easily faded, while the red color of most regular Zhen Zhu and Zhen Zhu Malau is much softer. The second characteristic is the color saturation. The color saturation of a true Golden Monkey will gradually or smoothly change from soft to deep color we call this smooth gradation. Unfortunately, not all Golden Monkey have this characteristic but perfect or masterpiece GMs have. The third characteristic is the pearl, the pearl of a true Golden Monkey is wormy and shining, some of them even cover the whole kok. A lot of Zhen Zhu Malau have this same characteristic too nowdays, but not a regular ZZ. The fourth characteristic is the chubby face. The face of a true Golden Monkey is chubby and not baby face like a kamfa, what I mean is the chin of a true Golden Monkey is thick and look chubby and the chin of a kamfa is thin and smooth like a baby face and the chin of most regular Zhen Zhu and Zhen Zhu Malau have more wrinkle like old people when they are older. The fifth characteristic is the body, the body of a true Golden Monkey is broader and more muscular than most regular Zhen Zhu and Zhen Zhu Malau, but it is still not as broad as most kamfa especially the old school Kamfa. The sixth characteristic is the tail. The tail of a true Golden Monkey is harder than the tail of most regular Zhen Zhu or Zhen Zhu Malau but not as hard as Kamfa tail. Not all Golden Monkey tail is fan tail like Kamfa, but they are not soft like Zhen Zhu and Zhen Zhu Malau. The seventh characteristic is the flowerline. The flowerline of the true Golden Monkey is suck and unorganized or most of them are uneven, some of them do not even have any flowerline. The best one is the Indonesian 7 times Grand Champion Golden Monkey but we have to remember that he is one of a kind. The eighth characteristic is the peduncle. The peduncle of a true Golden Monkey is shorter, thicker and broader than the peduncle of most regular Zhen Zhu and Zhen Zhu Malau. That is why it has harder tail and stronger tail structure compare to regular Zhen Zhu and Zhen Zhu Malau. The ninth characteristic is the eyes. The eyes of a masterpiece or perfect true Golden Monkey are inset like Kamfa and red color. One thing we have to understand, Golden Monkey is a perfected Hua Jiau and Zhen Zhu Malau is a perfected ZZ. That is why bro James, Sonny, and other people say that Golden Monkey is not a Zhen Zhu although Golden Monkey and Zhen Zhu Malau have some visible characteristics those are the same. There are a lot of ways breeders trying to perfected their Zhen Zhu strain to come close to true GM, but they are still not the same, although some characteristics are the same, like pearl, the face and may be fan tail. That is why they called their perfected Zhen Zhu the Zhen Zhu Malau. I will show some picture of true GMs and Zhen Zhu Malau so you guys can see the differences. For me, the easiest way to decide whether a strain is a Zhen Zhu Malau or a GM, is by comparing them to the pictures of Zhen Zhu Malau and true Golden Monkey I share with you guys. If it is closer to Zhen Zhu Malau then it is a Zhen Zhu Malau and if it is closer to Golden Monkey then it is a GM. The reason I said this is because the parents of the true GM, I mention above died already, but some Mal, Singapore and Indo breeders have been successful to breed the new Golden Monkey that are almost similar to the true Golden Monkey I mention above (I do not know their recipe so I can not share). Remember guys, this is my opinion only and not all people will agree with me moreover my ESL is not so good so I can not explain perfectly but this is the best I can do. I do not want to debate or argue about this Golden Monkey matter, I just want to share what I know only. If you guys want to accept it, then it is good, and if you don‚’t then it is OK with me too. Thank you for your understanding guys. Hopefully this information can help you guys to understand better about Golden Monkey and Zhen Zhu Malau. (Written by Bejita of Jatim Project, Indo)

Zhen Zhu -
Identification
Zhen Zhou or pearl flowerhorns are the most common breed of Flowerhorn available in the US. The ZZ name and breed has served as sort of a 'catch-all' breed name used for identifying Flowerhorns. In order to review the zz breed effectively there are several factors that need to be kept in mind to further narrow this wide category and appropriatley so as different strains of ZZ differ in appearance greatly. Two important factors are country of origin and timeline. ZZs from different countries can vary greatly as well as modern strains differing from classic strains greatly.

Breeding
ZZs do not share the same fertility problems as the Kamfa strain nor does it take a ZZ as long to reach sexual maturity. This likely accounts for why they are the most readily available. This also is likely responsible for the physical variation in strains, as ZZs are often mixed with other less fertile strains. This strain doesn't require much special treatment apart from normal flowerhorn breeding practices.

Care
In addition to being one of the most fertile strains, ZZs are also among the hardiest. They also don't require as much special treatment apart from normal flowerhorn husbandry.

Strains
*please note this is an incomplete and working list*
If you would like to see a strain added please send a pic and description to my PM box

As stated above the ZZ category is very wide and encompassing. Within this breed category breeders have created a tremendous amount of variation. Each subset strain has it's own unique characteristics, which means two very different looking fish can be classified as ZZ. Each country and breeder has their own take on what a ZZ should look like and what traits they find desirable. Some ZZ have huge heads with no color and weak fins while others have hard heads with strong fins and deep red color. It is therefore necessary to delve into the individual subset strains. This is difficult for two reasons, firstly there is no stopping a breeder from naming a new strain with no new or different characteristics but simply to differentiate himself/herself from other breeders. And two, the flowerhorn hobby and especially the ZZ breed is constantly evolving. Chances are as soon as this list is completed it will immediately need revision.

Therefore in order to understand the ZZ strain better, we can refer back to the 4 pure cichlid chart and note that the ZZ side of the family tree is based on the Trimac. Some characteristics, with all of the cross-breeding happening, are still around today. The head flower, spotted flower line, red eyes, red breast, green pearl sheen and rounded tail all point back to the pure species Trimac Cichlid. The more traits from a particular fish that you can tie back to the original 4 pure species Cichlids the easier it will be to identify it. IE the more traits in common with a Trimac, the more likely the fish is a ZZ. Conversley the more characteristics in common with a Syn, the more likely the fish is a Kamfa.

Classic Strains
Red Dragon:
Identification - Red Dragons belong to the Zhen Zhu strain of flowerhorns. One of the most popular breeds of all time the Red Dragon is so named, of course, for the spectacular red coloring on their bodies. Since this is the most readily available, easy to breed strain of flowerhorns there are many different looking fish all classified as Red Dragon. Their differences come as breeders across the world have their own take on how the fish should look. Whether the emphasis of a particular breeder may be on the pearling or the large heads, one thing is certain when it comes to Red Dragons, the more Red color on the fish the better!

Blue Dragon:

Identification - Blue Dragons belong to the Zhen Zhu strain of flowerhorns. So named for the blueish tinge mixed with the green metallic sheen on their bodies. Contrary to popular assumption blue dragons often do have red coloring, though this is mostly confined to the lower breast just below the pecoral fins as the Blue Dragon is a Trimac based fish. Their rise to popularity in the US around 2003-2005 was a result of their predisposition for large nuchal humps. Blue dragons were among the first strains to consistantly produce big headed fish as well as the most consistant production of "water koks". The Blue dragon while being a member of the Pearl Flowerhorn strain has very subtle pearls. Most Blue dragons do not have what are now pearl spots. Instead their bodies have a green metallic

Golden Base (Faders)- called that because during juvenile period of life they will loose their color and go completely black. As the fading process occurs the black "fades" away leaving a more vibrant and beautiful color underneath. Usually yellow or red. Overseas they are refered to as "Golden Base". A 'golden trimac' is a raw cross where the fish typically ends up looking like a trimac but red and yellow in color.
ILC Golden Base:

Red Texas - Belongs to the Golden base family of flowerhorns. To people and Thailand, Red texas are a completley different hybrid all together separate from Flowerhorns and are almost a different hobby in and of themselves. Originally created by breeding a Green Texas with a Mammon or KKP, then crossing back the offspring to the parents until a nice consistant red color is achieved. The most important feature of the Red Texas is quite obviously the color. Red Texas range in colors including:

- unfaded: lowes grade of RT
- yellow: second lowest grade
- Orange: majority of RT fall into this category
- Coral: pinkish but not quite full red
- Red: Most desirable color

The second characteristic that sets the Red Texas apart is the pearling. Red Texas can vary greatly in terms of type of pearling. There are three main types to consider when dealing with RT:

- Cyano or Dot pearls: These pearls come straight from one of the original 4 pure species cichlids used to create flowerhorn, Herichthys cyanoguttatus.
Examples of Dot pearls:

- Worm pearls: this is more of a desired trait in RT as well as Flowerhorns in general. RT with intense worm pearling are more costly and highly regarded than the Cyano or Dot pearling
Examples of worm pearling:

- Net pearls: The most desirable and most rare type of pearling. Very few fish display this type. Net pearling is almost a white framing of the individual scales themselves. When taken in from a distance it resembles a white mesh net.
Example of Net pearling

After coloring and pearls a red texas should then conform to normal flowerhorn standards (IE Large wide body, nice big tail, Large head, etc). Since the Herichthys species is not well known for their large nuchal humps, Red texas with heads are considered more difficult to come by.

King kamfa - from the kamfa family this fish typically has white or yellow eyes, red eye is possible but rare. Main feature of the breed is intense black double flower row and very thick wide white pearling. Orginating in Thailand this breed has seen a recent re-birth in vietnam. Body is typical of that of a Kamfa, fan tail, longer body than some other kamfas. Most closely follows the kamfa description above.
See also: http://www.flowerhorncraze.com/Differentia...owe-t13646.html

8. IndoMalau - Created by ILC or indonesian louhan club, proprietary breed of the world famous ILC using a Golden monkey (or Malau) female and Zhen Zhu Malau (ZZ bred with a Golden Monkey) for the first batch that was sent to the US. Second batch spawned from the legendary Elvis( http://www.flowerhorncraze.com/Elvis-Da-King-t10273.html ) and Golden Monkey female. Breed characterized by wild pearling all over the body, face, and head. What separates an IndoMalau's pearls from that of say a ZZ or a King Kamfa is that they are extremely fine. As the fish ages the pearls become more intricately woven and thinner. Prototypical dot-dash patterns found on Golden Monkey as well. Flowerlines vary dramatically some only have a few flower spots. Most ILC IndoMalaus will include some singular flowers on the back line or "top row". Red front half covers from the pectoral fins forwards, back half is a golden gradient intensifying in color towards the back half of the fish. Body is very wide and high a throwback to the original Louhan. Very pronounced chin or 'gobbler'. Head is usually a forward protruding water kok. Tail is fan shaped close to that of a kamfa, dorsal and anal fins lack trailers (a common trait found in ZZ) Caudle penduncle is very large and pronounced in this breed, this helps prevent developement of drop tail

Elvis:

9. Tan King - Created by Mr. Tan of VN, created by crossing a Zhen Zhu with a Kamfa. Breed has pearls and flowerline like that of a king kamfa, but body and finnage is more closely related to the Zhen Zhu description above. Most have protruding eyes like that of a Zhen Zhu and a more rounded tail also like the ZZ
See also: http://www.flowerhorncraze.com/Tan-King-t22055.html

10. Kamfamalau - mix of a Golden Monkey and Kamfa Female with Malau features. Body and face typify that of a typical Golden Monkey (see above) Finnage and sunken eye reflect the Kamfa genes. Main feature of a Kamfamalau is the pearling. Finnage typically takes on a 'frosted' pearl look to it rarely found in any other breed of flowerhorn. Pearling usually crosses all the way across the kok another rarity in flowerhorn breeds. This breed should represent the best characteristics of both kamfa and malau

Breed of Flowerhorn = A more general classification. Could contain several subsets of strains from different countries and breeders. The Four main breeds of flowerhorn are:
ZZ, GM, Kamfa, JK (goldenbase)

Strain of Flowerhorn = A more specific subset within a particular breed. Can get as specific as all coming from specific individual parent fish. Strains can also differ by country of origin and breeder.

Look at as many pictures and threads on this site as you can... always trust your eyes over what information someone is feeding you!!!

"Beauty is subjective and varying. What is considered beautiful in one place may not be in another, and there are no sure guidelines for beauty. Because of his, the overall impression that a fish gives you at the start is certainly very important. You may find defects and unattractive places when you carefully observe a fish's entire body, but then find that after you have stepped back a few feet, that the things you found fault with do not offend the eye and may actually be quite pleasing. Your balanced judgement is the overall impression you have received and is absolutely subjective. The most important part of selecting a Flowerhorn, apart from a few basic principles, is the overall feeling that a fish gives you." - The ever-changing of Lo-Han

okay the first couple of attachments should be fixed, let me know if you guys still can't see them

Dan - I'm going to add to this periodically cause we have a HUUUUGGGEE gap in between the old flowerhorns and the new strains ( missing JPG, POTO, jin huas, red texas, etc etc) so be ready with your chart , I think that helps a lot!

No problem, I know looking at the chart you can see quickly how something evolved and once we get the most common strains implemented might be cool to make a big poster out of this if we make it look good. This was just about 30 min but I saved ti so we can continue to build off this or start a new one and include a timeline of evolution of fish. This is great book info! heh

Yes, I will try to cover a section on Pinoy fish especially their ZZ. They along with thailand created the first consistant water head ZZ. Main difference between the Pinoy Water head ZZ and Thai is the pinoy version decended from Eastern Maiden so the tails were much better than the thai water head ZZ. Maybe you can help me out? this whole thread is going to be a work in process so I will hopefully continue updating it...

Only one small edit to the chart that I can see so far, GM is decended from Louhan. I'm pretty sure they came just after kamfa but before ZZ. Even the Great 'O' Master will tell you so 36_11_22[1].gif

James, didn't you post a chart with the four cichlids and what flowerhorns came from which? THat would be perfect for this thread and I could have sworn you were the one who posted it... 4_12_12[1].gif

sure will bro Pat, but I guess the best person to help you regarding the old strains would be uncle rl_lao but he is never online nowadays... :-(

Updated:

- Added JPG/Golden Apple Section
- Re-ordered definitions for a more 'timeline' like feel
- Pulled Bejita's GM standard from the linked thread for easier researching
- Color coding Breeds vs. strains

Soon to come:

- Red Texas section
- Phillipine Flowerhorns section
- Parrot Family section (mammon, ingot, BP, etc)
- King Bacarra section
- Taiwan Flowerhorn section

If you guys have any updates, corrections, issues, pictures, information etc, please post it here or PM me. I want to include as many viewpoints as possible and open to any and all suggestions!!!

I also need help with tracking down research materials. I know the vague location of many of them, but it takes a lot of work and searching so I could really use help with the man-hours needed to find it

Thanks!
