> Making My 800 Bigger, I've decided to do an addition to the tank

My name is Jonathan, otherwise known as TheFishGuy on a few other forums. I run monsterfishrescue.com and seem to be rescuing more and more fish. Recently my 800 that I built two and a half years ago started to leak. The tank has been drained and all the fish are living in a roughly 800 gallon pond. So since we have this saying that there's no problems just opportunities I've decided to take this opportunity to make the tank much larger. As it stands the tank measures 14' long 3' front to back and 30" tall. Since my incredibly understanding wife who lets me fill the house with fish tanks doesn't want the tank to take up more room I've decided to add onto the back of it. I'm going to take it a step further though and make the addition deeper. What I mean by deeper is by making it taller by going down.

Here's the future footprint:

So while the footprint will be larger indeed, it's going to be 26 or so inches deeper in the addition part. Here's a 3D to explain.

Then what it'll look like through the glass:

With the addition the total gallons will go from 785.45 to 1623.27 more than doubling gallonage. More importantly this will give options for more fish to go into the tank by creating two huge breaks in line of site.

Here's a link to the original build, and to the thread that was a continuation:

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewtop...;highlight=1122

The continuation:

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewtop...t=wish+list+800

This is essentially part three :) And yes, I've started this thread on a bunch of forums because I'd like to get to know the people from this forum. :)

That is a spectacular undertaking. Good luck with your project. I know I will built something similar but probably not til I'm old and my kids graduate highschool.

I have been toying with the idea of building a 125 tank its more of a grow out but would be cool to have maybe even have it prebuilt with dividers for flowerhorns

Hey thanks for posting one of the videos of the tank! I didn't think of that :)

Marcus, I wouldn't use the glass you're speaking of, it's double pane and tempered. The thickness of each pane is not very thick and it wouldn't be able to handle the pressure. They'd make great lids though!

As for trading wives.... Not a chance dude... not a chance! LOL

I do definately plan on keeping this thread updated. I was planning on starting today but time isn't going to allow it... I suppose the day isn't over yet!

Glad to see you adding on, I followed your first build like a hawk. What are you going to end up coating it with? I know you had some issies with the drylock and another product.

I'm going to try pond armor this time. It goes on 10mil thick, and I can use my sprayer to put it on which usually means I'll put it on thick LOL. I made a short video last nite of the plan if you'd like to watch. I'm actually thinking of doing all my updates in video form just to save time typing... Laziness at it's finest! Anyway, here's the video:

Incidently I like the guys on this forum. Pretty cool cats.

I've got a couple of video updates on some progress. This weekend I'm going to try and get all the lumber together to get more done.

Wow...You are VERY dedicated...

But I know how much you must love those fish to being doing all that..

There's a lot of work with taking care of fish... cleaning the tanks, changing water, etc..
I have 6 fish tanks, biggest being 90 gallons, and my family thinks Im crazy..but when you
love aquatic life, you don't feel like it's 'work'.. Your pay is the pleasure of relaxing and watching
the fish swimming around happy in your tanks... :-)

Good luck on your projects!!!!

Thanks for the kind words guys. I really appreciate it. As for keeping them clean... with carefull planning all I really have to do to the larger display tanks is water changes, and those are easy because the display tanks are plumbed right to floor drains, so one turn of a valve and 1/3 of the water goes down the drain :)
