Well i think i think the coloring up of the female shows some breeding mood. But watch for her stomach to see if it swells up as it may indicate shes ready to lay. Also check for her tube to see if it is down (this is pretty obivous). I would say at this stage condition her with high protein foods

Ok well it been a couple of days and no eggs yet. I have noticed the near the stomach area she is getting a lil fatter... kinda a lil bugle. I am guessing these are the eggs or maybe shes just getting fat from being married lol. Any who how long would it normaly take before i can call it quits?

Hers a lil update. I have removed the divider and thing are going well i guess there is no big fights just a lil flaring here and there. They are also starting to dig the male more than the female...... Side note for some reason the female has her head down now most of the time is this normal?

from my experiene the females head does go down a bit and she darkens and bands up and gets pretty aggresive when u go near the tank (even not having eggs laid yet)... my male didnt change too much until the eggs hatched... as far as the cleaning goes my male dug out alot of nests while the female sat back and watched but eventually started helping him out...

if the male is flaring up and slapping her with his tail then that is a sign he is asking her to mate..

from the behavior u explained looks like it will happen soon.

Edit: ANY PICS?

To better this, you can give them privacy and not turn on their tank lights or be around the tank with your face in it all the time. Some plants for privacy can help a bit for shy pairs that arent use to you yet. They are protective with their eggs, and the female tries to lay where it's safe for her eggs. Sometimes you can see a big fat tube hanging down but she wont lay. Sometimes could be because she dont feel it's safe to lay or she doesn't feel it with that one male.
They usually like to lay and fertilize around sunset time, and best with no one around. Some pairs can do it with with people around when they know and are use to that kind of environment.
To enhance her egg laying, you can feed her good healthy foods, and keep healthy water. When you see her tube down but seem like forever for her to lay, one 25% or so water change should do the job. Or you can just do that for the better of it all.
Tail whipping and digging with no aggressive fighting is a great sign. That's the start of it all. Then, with most adult pairs, you'll see the male would thrust one direction to the other to seduce and arouse her so they can get it on. When you see that and the female isn't scared or run away, they are a pair and you can expect breeding.

oh and water temp should be in the mid eighties. With summer teperatures, you shouldn't worry unless you have Cold A/C in your home.

BTW, try sticking your hand in the tank and pet the female.

I wouldn't touch a fish during breeding bro.. you can get bit pretty badly, they tend to be more aggressive/defending nest

i never bred flowerhorns before but i think all fish have the same attitude when breeding. dont touch your fish you will get bit. LOL. GL!

Thats what i was figuring petting a fish in the middle of bredding hhmmmmm sounds like he was saying "let her bite your finger". I have had my jelly bean parrot and green texas breed before. The fry were not that intresting they just looked like convicts.

How are the pair doing now? Usually when the female colors up and her head pops out a little, she is getting ready to spawn or her tube will drop within several days. The female will usually loose color and her head will come down when she is laying eggs or has finished laying eggs. Sometimes a pair will spawn when you are not home and one parent or another will eat all the eggs. Keep trying and you should succeed 104.gif
