Bamboo is a fast growing plant so it will work.
Remember that they need light inorder to ulilize the nitrate.

refugiums are a great addition to any tank. I have one on my salt tank. But for freshwater, you really need ALOT of plants to help bring the nitrates down. Something probably at least half the size of the main tank stuffed with bamboo or other fast growing plant.

It's a shallow tank getting it's water from the main tank and deposit back to the main tank.
The refugium will hold plants to take in nitrate while harboring micro organisms and small shrimps which will also flow back into the main tank to serve as food for coral and filter feeders.
