Toshiba to announce HD-DVD pull-out Tuesday
By MarketWatch
Last update: 8:57 p.m. EST Feb. 18, 2008

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Toshiba Corp. will announce its withdrawal from the high-definition DVD business as soon as Tuesday afternoon, according to Japanese media reports.

The consumer electronics giant is expected to reveal plans to immediately halt manufacturing and development of HD DVD players and cease sales of all HD DVD products by the end of the month, the Nikkei business daily reported.

Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida is expected to make the announcement during a press conference Tuesday afternoon. He is also expected to reveal plans to ramp up Toshiba's investments in computer chips.

Toshiba and Sony Corp. have been battling for dominance in the DVD Markey with competing formats. Toshiba's decision comes after Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, said it would sell only hardware and DVDs formatted to Sony's Blu-ray technology, and the Warner Bros. division of U.S. entertainment group Time Warner Inc. said its consumer DVD releases would be in Blu-ray.

Shares of Toshiba were down 1.3% in Tokyo trading early Tuesday.

Also, XBox 360 moving to Blu Ray?

Xbox 360 Blu-Ray Add-on Expected

The format war is finally over, and Blu-ray has triumphed over the HD-DVD format. But what happens to all of those HD-DVD early adopters?

From the looks of Microsoft, one of the earliest adopters of HD-DVD, it's just time to move on. Rumors are already circulating about Microsoft is planning a Blu-ray add-on for its Xbox 360 console similar to the HD-DVD add-on that is already available.

UPDATE: Microsoft makes a statement in regards to HD DVD.

This rumor isn't new, but with recent headlines proclaiming the imminent demise of HD-DVD speculation has grown louder. As early as 2006 former Microsoft corporate Vice President Peter Moore commented that Microsoft would remain open to the idea of the Blu-ray format, saying "We don't know which will win -- HD-DVD or Blu-ray. But because we've gone with an external form of device, we can remain compatible with changes to the situation in the future."

Rumors say that Microsoft could have the Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive ready as early as this May. Just like the HD-DVD add-on though, the supposed Blu-ray drive would only be used for movies, meaning no Xbox 360 games would start appearing on Blu-ray discs. Keep in mind that these are only rumors at this point, but giving Microsoft's history, it is very likely to be true.

Glad I'm a PlayStation fan. And glad I never invested in a 360 because of my curiousity of HD-DVD.

t's official. Toshiba just made a statement saying, " it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders." Cessation of the player and recorders are targeted for March 2008. Volume production of HD DVD disk drives for PCs and games will end in the same time frame. However, Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation did say that Toshiba will, "continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives." That's it folks, the format war is over, Blu-ray has won. Full press release after the break.

Toshiba Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Businesses

19 February, 2008

Company Remains Focused on Championing Consumer Access to High Definition Content

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."

Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.

Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.

This decision will not impact on Toshiba's commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.

Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.

I was catching up on my news and saw they were doing it at 5pm HK time which is 12am PST so was perfect :)

Pre CES they were neck and neck, after the bomb was dropped the sales went to 70/30 now its 100/0. Sony is a good company but then tend to messing up things so I pray that they have made the right decision. I am glad to see a single format selected and working in the cable industry I can say 2008 is the year for HD. TV sets are priced right, we now have a single format for disks and I know our HD content is expanding daily. For those who have enjoy!

Yeah, I think having one format will invite more people to actually join in on the HD revolution.
