Names of fish don't matter much to me; but the origin of the fish is very crucial in my opinion. Knowing the origin of the fish, you can somewhat predict the future of the fish and set your expectation.
Very soon many of you will own at least one Tan King flowerhorn in your collection. From various threads on this forum, you may have learned what a Tan King is. But what exactly made it and who created it? Below is what I learned directly from the creator of this new flowerhorn strain.
Tan King is a mixed breed between a Zhen Zhu mixed male and a (King) Kamfa female. Thus the offsprings have both Zhen Zhu and kamfa traits, but as you have seen, some look more Zhen Zhu and some look more Kamfa. There have already been many successful batches of Tan Kings and the ones that are coming to the US soil are from various batches of spawning.
So who created Tan Kings and why are they called Tan Kings?
The creator of Tan Kings is Mr. Tan (whose real name is Thanh Minh Ha), in Vietnam. Mr. Tan began his adventure as a flowerhorn hobbyist just like many of us, when he was a moped/scooter mechanic. With the great passion for the hobby, but with the poor job, Tan had to borrow money from friends and neighbors to attempt to create something new to contribute to the hobby. Finally in 2007, after 10 attempts with 10 different pairs of breeders, a new beautiful mixed breed was born, and he named it Tan King, partially after his name and also to represent a new generation of flowerhorn, New King "made in Vietnam" (since "tan" means "new").
