Alright, im looking to replace some of my ac 110 with fluval 400 series. Anyone have any experiences with the models? Seems i can get some good deals on the 404 series and doesnt look like huge differences between the 404 and 405

The difference between the 404 series and the 405 series
This information taken directly off the manufacturers web-site www.Hagen.com in their FAQ.

There have been so many design changes to the 404 while it was on the market that it is difficult to compare the various models with the 405 series. For this reason, the differences mentioned are from the latest 404 series versus the new 405 models.

When comparing the 405 to the latest version of the 404, they are very similar.

Aquarium capacity, flow rate and filtration volume are all the same.

The 404 is gray and blue while the 405 is black and silver.

The brackets that are used to hold the hoses over the rim of the aquarium on the 405 are more user friendly. They do not have the rubber bands like on the 404.

The 405 also has a larger, clog-free intake strainer.

i had a 404 that started leaking about 15 gallons all over my living room. I have not used it since, since I wont trust that much water with a small rubber ring...

If you want to use canister filter then go with Rena XP3 bro.
Cheaper than Fluval 405 and much better.

xp3 is better for the same price range. but if you really want to use fluval 404, it's not a bad filter at all. For the leaking problem, what you need to pay attention to every time you clean/change media for that filter is making sure that the rubber gasket is in place correctly before you push the top down and lock it in. Better yet, buy an extra gasket and put it in there. Another negative thing about fluval 404 is the priming/jumpstart of that filter initially. If your filter container is empty and you try to pump water into it, it's a b*tch. It just doesn't work. So you either fill up your filter container or pour water into the intake hose as you start it. Subsequent refillings should be easy as long as you lock the hoses when you take the container out. I've been using an used 404 and an used 304 for over 2 years. No problem so far.

i never used fluval myself, ive been using RENA XP for many years and only had 1 defect XP4, returned it and got a perfect working one, rena xp can hold a lot of bio too and push more GPH then fluval, except Fluval FX5, heh.

I never liked Fluval filters... I remember having one back in the days and it took for ever to pump the water.

XP4 is the better filter, differences, XP4 pushes out 100GPH more (450 GPH total) and carries 1 more tray then the XP3, everything else is the same. so 4 total trays in XP4. i have a xp3 running in my 38 gallon and thats all that i need. if you think its too much current, media and other filter accessories will slow down the GPH and/or you can also install the spray bar that comes with it. i used 2 XP4s in a 185 gallon, crystal clear. hope this helps. good luck bro.
