I have been wanting to get a lizard again for a long time and going to get one this week I have decided and was debating between a bearded dragon and a tegu and leaning more to the tegu side.

Any help on picking one over the other? I do have kids so may ne not fully commit to a tegu since I know the bearded dragon may do better with them.

From my experience i would go with the Bearded Dragon... the are known to be a starter for young children. They are sweet and gentle.

I don't know what a Tegu is though...lol but i know Beardies are great especially if you have small children... Just my 2 cents...
Good Luck

Coo I think for now that may be the best bet also. Read some disturbing stuff on tegu so may get one later on but the kids will want to hold and play with it so feel better if it was a bearded.

I have an LLL Reptile around the corner and debating which to get

Standard dragon

Or spend a little more and get a cooler combo

tegus get big and you have to raise them as babies to train them to get use to your family. They get pretty big and quite heavy with claws. Argentene tegus are the ones to get and not columbians. Columbians are angry tegus. Beardies get to about2 feet tip to tip. And are the most popular lizards to have for anyone, because they eat like bigs and just stay where you put them and ever bites unless they dont know you and see you as a threat. But they are very easy to keep.

Depend on what size and look you like. But tegus are sure more active. A beardy is like a dumb piece of dough and gets kind of boring. Tegus eat human food and more. Pizza hamburger fish, ect. You can walk them on a leash. You put a leash on a beardie, and you'll be standing in one place for 5 hours.

Depends on what type of personality you want. But lets put it this way, a beardy is for beginers, and the tegu is a step above that.

They will need to drain lots of your electricity every month to be healthy too. The heat lamps run all day and can be quite costly.

Hope that helps you decide.

If you decide on a beardy and live in socal. I can tell you where to get a colorful one for a good price under 100. Oh and tegu babies are bigger than dragon babies. Dragon babies can get killed if your kids dont know better.

Nice what are you keeping them in? instead of building a 5 footer i bought a 100 gallon tank/stand. its pretty tall so we can install some nice branches and a mini feeder fish pond inside the tank 36_11_22[1].gif
