ive had my flowerhorn since december of 07. i have plenty of experience with other cichlids but i find myself learning something new about flowerhorns everyday. right when i think im getting it, someone tells me to do something different. ive had several questions about tank size, water parameters, gravel, tank mates, food and feeding schedules, lighting, water treatments, etc. all of this could be very overwhelming to someone who is just getting started with such a high maintanence fish. so i was wondering if one of our experts could let the beginners know exactly how much theyre going to spend, and what to do to get started. i would hate to have someone buy a 200-300 dollar fish to start with and not know what theyre getting into.

IMHO, if you are into FH, you need to do some research from all differents categories which we do have in some of the threads here and then get a cheap or low grade flowerhorn to raise first. After that, you may think about getting a $200-$300 to keep. No one is experience enough to claim that he has never have a fish die on him, it's just nature 101.gif 64.gif

Thats what I did. I bought a cheap low grade FH. Hes turning out pretty nice but I find myself wanting to blow a paycheck and go all out. But then self control kicks in and I get over it. Plus the lectures from my wife dont help either. Ill just grow this one out and gain experience before I go for a MP.

if you just keep one... wouldnt kill your wallet. Some of us went over board with FHs... I myself is one of them. I too love FHs. At one time I had 10 flowerhorn tanks. But I cut back a lot and now just trying to focus on a small number of FHs that I have now. These guys do need a lot of TLC so thats why I rather just focus on some and grow them up to become MPs. So it's really up to you. Also learn from the members on this forum. When i first started I wasnt on any forums so I learned the hard way with FHs dying and bad tank setups... etc. So learn before you start. Tell me what your thinking of and I can help break down how much it will cost you. just make sure you control yourself.. this hobby gets very addicting.

I just spent my money on one mp good tank and filter.this is the way to go if u can I no it is hard.fight the erg to breed them it is very hard to get rid of the babies that suck.research and learn how to raise a mp.take ur time find one u like cycle a apropriat tank with rainbows or other small fish for him to chase do not have another flowerhorn or cichlid in there just ur new fh.buy flowerhorn and enjoy.I don't go for buying a crappy one first if u can raise cichlids u can raise flowerhorn just research on ph temp and foods a crappy fish is going to live for 6 years and are hard to get rid of a mp eats the same and the only thing bad is if u loose him the price tag gets ya but it is hard to screw up ur flowerhorn if u no how to take care of cichlids gl pat
