OK I am going to upgrade my planted to 10g but I have cherries and want to move my growing discus in there. Will the discus go after the cherries or and I better off keeping them separate?

Guppies will eat the baby Cherries as well. I made that mistake when I first set up my little 15gallon planted tank. I stocked it with a bunch of Guppies and Ghost Shrimp. Then got my Snails. Then got ten little Yellow Shrimp. The second they hit the water the damn Guppies snapped up all the smaller ones. I now have four left out of ten. Even the adult Cherries and Yellows hid all the time because of the Guppies chasing them. The Guppies are now gone and you can easily tell I've got forty little Shrimp in there because they're out in the open on everything now. The only fish I've found that don't bother even the smallest babies are the Bristlenose Plecos, Cory Cats, and Spiny Headed Hillstream Loaches.

10gal might be too small for even 1 discus.
The thing about discus is they do alot better in a school of 6 or more. I tried several times keeping a solo discus in a 10gal and it didn't work out very well. He was always spooked and stressed out and refuse to eat. Once I put him back with the other discus, he was normal again. So that would mean at least a 60gal, 10gal/fish ratio. Cherry shrimps are the size of mysis and discus love mysis shrimp. -------------------- Know fish or No fish

Well the discus are growing like weeds as are the shrimps. They are so fun to watch :) I cant wait to move them to the 10g and watch them multiply. What is a good substrate to use? I have 20 lbs of black 3m Color Quartz I was going to use.

Since you're keeping discus, whatever substrate you use, you should put a layer of peat under it. Makes the water a bit acidic and soft. The plants will love you for it.

I am going to get some plant substrate this weekend and peat. for both tanks. Any special care I need to do with the peat? I have a female holding right now and hope I can crank them out for everybody. Would be fun to swap shrimp with other people and want to get some other varieties so if you have them let me know!

I've got a couple of Yellows. Not sure how many are left after the great Guppy disaster. But I believe there's at least one male and female. Hopefully I'll get some babies soon. I want so Red Crystals sooooo bad. Those things are awesome looking. They're so intense you'd swear they're salt water shrimp.

Dan, make sure it does not contain any pesticides or other chemicals. At the Hoedepot in the section where they sell soil for orchids and african violets, you can find the peat. What you need to do is put some in a large bowl and add some water and mix until the peat is moist. Then just spread the peat in your "DRY" tank. You just need a thin layer about half inch. Start adding your substrate on top of the peat until you reache your desired depth, (for me, 2" for lowest point and 3" for highest point). and slowly add water up to 1/4 of the tank, start planting, and fill her up. Don't put your fish in this tank right away. Make sure the parameters are stable; usually there is a huge ammonia spike. A seeded filter will help alot. I have absolutely no luck with shrimps. -------------------- Know fish or No fish

Awesome! Thats this weekends project setting up a 10g and use a seeded filter and some tank water.
People say that about shrimps but these must be very hearty ones cause I have no clue what I am doing heh. I am going to keep this group and grow them out and if I am lucky will have enough to share with everybody! -------------------- |
