Been thinking of this for awhile decided to try it. I mixed 4 whole shirmp with shell, 1/4 cup cyclop-eeze, a handfull of spirulina flake, and a handfull of freeze dried krill and mixed into paste. Melted some unflavored gelatin in about 1/2 cup of hot water, cooled water and mixed with everything else. I think I may have used too much water, oh well I will know better next time. I plan on feeding this mixture about 4 times a week but I think it will help with both color and kok. What does everyone else think of this idea, or any other suggestions on ingredients?? I might use some salmon next time, but wanted to make a small test batch to see if they will eat it.

I put too much water this time so I had to put in more gelatin. I think once I get quantities down it will be good. If I get enough gelatin with as little water as possable it will be solid and won't pollute tank I don't think. Just hope the fish will eat it, but I figure if I can put the whole "variety" into one food as a supplement to pellet it will be alot easier, and more beneficial.

well it set a little bit but needs less water and more gelatin. Sure I can get it down right. Gave him some and he really tore it up, but still a little loose so clouded the water. Key is to get the gelitain set firm so the small pieces just don't leach through gills and back into water, but think I can figure this out.

i have a theory on that and that is my next project Porgy. Cyclopeeze would be good dry ingredient for a dough, and ground up freeze dried krill. I was thinking of putting some shrimp and salmon in a food dehydrator untill it's like jerky and put it in food processor. You would basically have a protien, anaxtahene, omega 3, HUFA, amino acid fish "flour", add just enough water to bind everything together. Run it through a meat grinder or pasta machine and cut with a knife on the way out and put back into dehydrator. Might be able to make your own pellet. That is best method I can think of but need to research online too, but my big thing is ingredients. I want WHOLE market shrimp with shell, cyclops, krill, and salmon. I think all those ingredients especially the cyclops, are great for color and kok.

lol knew I left one out, but yes spirulina. Used spirulina flake in the gel stuff. Hope it's more solid tomorrow. We'll see.

Joe/Dan,
In order to minimize water polution, you need to eliminate fine food particles. A blender will create alot of inconsistant sizes and also creates too much very fine food particles. What you need is a meat grinder. The ones that has an auger with a blade at the end and cut the meat throught a metal screen of particular size. Just look up meat grinder for hamburger/sausage making. This machine will cut up meat at a very uniform size and you can change out the screen sizes to make different sizes of meat for the age of your fish. This is what I do. 1. Precut the beef heart, fish fillet, prawns, squid, or what ever into a large salad or spagehti strainer and let all the juices run out. 2. Mix up the meat with your hands. This way you don't need to mix it after it gets grounded. 3. start grounding and collect the ground meat in another strainer. 4. Sprinkle the ground meat on a cookie tray, make thin and flat and put into freezer. 5. After frozen, break into manageable pieces and vacuum pack for frozen storage. This method is the cleanest and convenient to use. Before feeding you just need to remove enough frozen food and let thaw out. No need for gelatine, agar or any binder. The fish will eat the mini chunks whole. Good luck. -------------------- Know fish or No fish

I have an electric meat grinder I use for deer meat, so might give that a try. My biggest thing is I want to incorporate the cyclop-eeze into the mix and that stuff is like sawdust. Spirulina is another one that is powdery. i wonder if I just coat a small piece of shrimp in cyclops if that would work??
Dan, as soon as mix hits the water my fish has it in his mouth. Cant get enough of the stuff. -------------------- [A minute ago] teta_head_fish: isuck

Joe, Instead of freezing the meat first, you can mix your spirulina and cyclopeeze in the meat then vacuum seal it and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours before freezing. The negative pressure in the bag will make the power adsorb into the meat tissue. Just like you would marinade meat for cooking. You shouldn't need any binder. But why make it hard on yourself, you can feed cyclopeeze flakes and spirulina pellets. Same result just less messy and headache. -------------------- Know fish or No fish

I would add some chicken liver in there as well. Dark meats are very high in iron. Which humans and fish both need. Iron helps increase blood circulation, and helps produce stronger blood cells as well.
