I have a couple of pairs of blue rams in my discus tank, along with a few tetras. The rams are on a continual spawning cycle, although I have nowhere currently to raise the fry. The parents do a good job of protecting them when eggs and in the nursery pit, but as soon as they become free swimming, neons pick them off quite efficiently. The video below shows a brood first exploring from behind their flowerpot with Mum and Dad moving them back home if they wander too far. You can also see the opportunistic neons grabbing a mouthful every now and then. Within 3 hours of filming, the fry had been decimated.

I was lucky enough to be able to keep some tank reared sea horses in my nano. The tank in question was an all in one Orca 450, which is about 15 UK gallons. The tank came with compact T5 white and actinic tubes and also with some night time LEDs. The skimmer was a poor designed venturi system which was always breaking and to this day, still needs replacing.
The horses were fed on frozen Mysis shrimp that had been soaked in a vitamin solution at least three times a day. I had them for many months and they were very labour intensive. Unfortunately I had to let them go to a new owner because I started spending many days at a time away working, and horses need to be fed every day as they have no stomach. It was unfair to ask my wife to feed them as she didn't want the responsibility if they died. Here are some pics though: Newly introduced; Look at the difference once settled in.

Up until last year, I had my 48x 18x 15 set up as a reef with a sump. I kept chaeto in the sump and lit it 24 hours to help with nutrient export. Fish included royal gramma, coral beauty, banggai cardinals, green chromis, yellow tang, firefish and percula clowns.
![]() Over 300 pictures of this project on my website detailing the set up from start to finish. I now have a nano, I will post details of that another day. Mark

Greetings. I recently received a message on my Youtube page about posting in this forum, so here I am :) I have recently returned to Discus keeping after a while keeping a reef. It is a 48x 18x 15 aquarium with a sump. I don't really want to breed from them as I don't currently have the facilities, although a pigeon and marlboro have paired and regularly produce viable offspring. Usually by day 3 or being a wriggler, they are eaten. I also have two pairs of blue rams consistently producing broods, again being eaten. I don't have a photobucket account yet, so more pictures can be seen on my website here, it also shows the set up I had when importing from Malaysia. I will add a few other pics of recent fish below though.
These pictures were all taken about 3 months ago with a still reasonably new tank, a pH of 8 and hardness of 8dH. There are newer pictures that I haven't uploaded yet and also videos on my Youtube page. Mark |
